The Indiana Resource Center for Autism has recently added an article to their e-newsletter. The article begins:

"A collaborative approach between speech-language pathologists (SLPs) and occupational therapists (OTs) is a highly effective treatment strategy.  The combination of the two therapeutic approaches allows therapists to address most of the core deficits and differences attributed to autism spectrum disorders (ASD)."

ASD Speaking Sounds: A Program to Foster the Sounds of Language

ASD Speaking Sounds is a program of learning to speak that may be implemented by a parent, teacher, therapist, or other adult. The program starts by requesting one sound at a time. The lessons then expand to include increasing numbers of sounds—so that by the end of the program, the children are producing sequences of four speech sounds. -from the book description

SLPs: Resources are available!

As noted in the Indiana Resource Center for Autism's latest e-newsletter, "As a member of a multidisciplinary team or as an isolated professional, the SLP often needs access to standardized assessment in language functioning, pragmatics and social skills. It is not always practical for a school district or an agency to purchase extensive speech and language assessment materials. The Indiana Institute on Disability and Community has a collection of materials that may assist Indiana speech language pathologists."

CeDIR has these assessments in the library collection available to any SLP who lives or works in Indiana.  These materials circulate for four weeks at a time and can be renewed as long as no one else has requested them. The list of assessment and related materials can be found at: http://www.iidc.indiana.edu/index.php?pageId=3274

"I"ing for Communication

The iPad has revolutionized the augmentative communication world and the way Speech Language Pathologists deliver articulation and language therapy to students and individuals. Despite easy access, we need to know the range of applications, how to judge and apply the technologies that are available, how to integrate the application and make them work in the world of learning.

The Institute’s Indiana Resource Center for Autism, in conjunction with Hamilton-Boone-Madison Special Services Cooperative, is offering six training opportunities in the months of August and September.

Attendees will be able to:
· Identify how to use the devices for augmenting communication;
· Learn how technology can create content, share knowledge and build and support relationships;
· Learn how to incorporate technology into articulation and language therapy;
· Identify the applications for augmentative communication including those that focus on core vocabulary; and
· Identify the applications for articulation and language therapies.

WH Question Comprehension Test: Exploring the World of Question Comprehension for Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders

Understanding the communication demands of WH questions such as Who, What, When, Where, Why, and How is challenging for many individuals with autism spectrum disorders and for others with language difficulties, such as those with Down Syndrome. Speech language pathologists will want to explore this new screening test for verbal students and gather ideas for facilitating WH question acquisition within the classroom and other settings. In addition to the test, the publication describes the research underlying the development of the test, highlights results from various populations, and provides practical insights and suggestions for interventions. 178 pp. Author: Beverly Vicker.
