September 26, 2014, 8:30 AM-4:30 PM
Student Center, Ball State University, Muncie, IN
Keynote Speaker: Dr. David McIntosh, David and JoAnna Meeks Distinguished Professor of Special Education, Ball State University.
Current statistics from the Center for Disease Control indicate that 1 in 88 children has a diagnosis on the Autism Spectrum, including Asperger's Syndrome, PDD-NOS, and Autism. Moreover, the population of students on the Spectrum in higher education seems to be increasing. It is imperative that faculty, advisors, and other support professionals understand how students on the Autism Spectrum fare in higher education and how to employ best practices in teaching and advising students on the spectrum.
You are invited to submit a proposal to present a paper, demonstrate useful teaching techniques, or create a panel discussion on meeting the needs of students on the Autism spectrum in higher education, or on preparing high school students for higher education.
The symposium schedule will include a welcome and keynote speaker, student, family, and administrative panels, lectures and demonstration sessions, and a closing session. A certificate of participation will be provided.
Organizers: Darolyn "Lyn" Jones, Department of English; Larry Markle, Disability Services; Elizabeth Riddle, Department of English, Ball State University.
