Summer is still a few months away, but spaces are already filling up for this year's Camp Yes, And... Teen registration for the Indianapolis classes is full, but you can still register to be put on the waiting list. There are still spaces for teens in Bloomington, and there are spaces for educators in both Bloomington and Indianapolis.

Camp Yes And: An Improv Camp for Teens with ASD and Teachers

Staff at the Indiana Resource Center for Autism have published an article on the success of the summer camp co-supported by IRCA and the Center for Education and Lifelong Learning. Camp Yes, And is a one-week session that offers the use of improvisational techniques to help improve the communication skills of teenagers on the autism spectrum.

Camp Yes, And?

Wondering about Camp Yes, And? While both sessions are already full this year, you will have an opportunity to see the campers in action. Final showcases for each camp are open to the public and anyone interested in seeing what the campers have learned throughout the week is invited to attend. There will be two offerings:

Bloomington
July 15 from 3-4:30 PM in the auditorium of the Monroe County Public Library

Indianapolis
July 22 from 3-4:30 PM in the Lilly Auditorium at the IUPUI University Library

On May 18, ComedySportz Indianapolis will put on a special improv show to support Camp Yes, And... 100% of ticket sales and silent auction bids will be donated to the online fundraising campaign. At a ComedySportz match, two teams compete head-to-head, improvising scenes, songs, and games for audience laughs and votes. It is an all-ages show, so kids are very welcome.

Camp Yes, And... offers second week

Camp Yes, And... has expanded to another week! The second week offering will be held in Indianapolis at the IUPUI University Library. The camp is limited to 10 teachers and 10 teens with autism. Please register soon as the first week filled up quickly!

Camp Yes, And

Last summer, the Indiana Institute’s Center on Education and Lifelong Learning and Indiana Resource Center for Autism collaborated to offer Camp Yes, And, an improvisational theater summer camp for teens on the autism spectrum and teachers.

Camp Yes, And was the first program of its kind in Indiana, providing both direct service to individuals with autism and a professional development experience for teachers. Recently, the Center received a grant award from the Collaborative Research and Creative Activity Funding program administered by the Office of the Vice Provost of Research at Indiana University Bloomington to conduct research around the impact of Camp Yes, And when it is offered again in the summer of 2016.

Camp Yes, And...

Camp Yes, And is a brand new summer improv camp for teens on the autism spectrum and teachers, co-sponsored by the Indiana Resource Center for Autism, the Center for Education and Lifelong Learning, and Answers for Autism. Fourteen teenagers and 11 teachers have registered for camp--nearly at capacity! Help is still needed, though, to fund this camp.

Improv helps teens on the spectrum to develop relationships and social cues, flexible thinking, and communication skills. Parents and teachers also report that improv classes have helped them to see teens on the spectrum in a whole new light. And don’t forget the fun!

Easter Seals Crossroads Summer Day Camps

The Easter Seals Crossroads of Indianapolis hosts CampAbility every year for young children with disabilities. This year, they have added two more options for children and adolescents with autism or developmental delays: the Life Skills Camps and PALSS.

The Life Skills Camps are designed for adolescents, aged 13-18, to master skills such as cooking, cleaning, laundry, money handling and shopping. Two camp levels are offered. Introductory classes only meet on Wednesdays for six consecutive weeks and is lead by an occupational therapist and a speech language pathologist. Intermediate meets Monday through Friday from 9am-3pm for the week of July 26-30, is led by an occupational therapist and a special education teacher, and will also incorporate a pre-driving component. If you register before May 14th, each session costs $295; after that point registration is $325 per teen.

The PALSS Club is designed for a younger audience--children aged 6-9. "PALSS" stands for Practice And Learn Social Skills, and the daily sessions will cover concepts like personal space, body language, talking to peers, team work and sportsmanship. The camps meet once a week on either Wednesdays or Thursdays, depending which 6-week session you sign up for. A mandatory Meet & Greet on either May 5th or May 10th will allow parents to meet the camp leaders and determine whether their children would benefit from PALSS.
